Can you do a leak down test on a rebuilt engine?
I recently rebuilt a motor for my car. I am turning the motor over by hand and I can hear compression coming out of the bottom end. Is that not okay and is this because the piston rings havent seated yet? My mind tells me everything is okay but I Just need a little reassurance. Thanks for all the help.
When you turn the engine over by hand you should hear air being compressed and released the more you turn it over and that's normal. As long as there is no actual air escaping when it shouldn't be, like when a cylinder is on top dead center and the valves are supposed to be closed. And, as you mentioned, there might be a slight leak even then do to the new rings and freshly ground valve seats but that's not a problem. I was an engine builder for 13 years and I would leak down test every engine I built just to be sure so I would recommend it anyway.
