It is a crazy world we are living in today. We are never certain if the price at the pump will be three dollars or five dollars. There is so much uncertainty in the market place that many people have sold their boats, airplanes, large sport utility vehicles, and anything else that consumes a lot of fuel. But consider this, what if your gas hog goes beyond your recreation or summertime fun? What if your livelihood depends on the price of fuel?
Not many people realize it, but that truck driver you zoom past on your morning commute probably does not work for a larger company. Joe the Trucker likely owns his own rig and is running loads for any number of different companies. Every load is contracted and hauled on a load-by-load basis so the profit he is making is always unpredictable. This makes life especially hard for Joe when he has to consider filling up his tanks with 240 gallons of high-priced diesel fuel.
Many drivers decided to park their trucks and take on a new profession once fuel prices doubled. It was near impossible to make money driving a truck because the rate to transport freight is not determined by the driver - it is determined by the freight broker. Many freight brokers did not want to pass the fuel costs on to their customers in fear of losing clients so they passed the loss on to the drivers. By the time drivers were paying for fuel, their equipment, insurance, and living expenses out on the road, they did not have enough profit left over to provide for their families.
Now it is truly amazing how a presidential election can take the average price of fuel from $4.25 a gallon down to $1.75 a gallon seemingly overnight. Without getting too political on you, it seems fair to say that the government plays a major role in cleaning out our pocketbooks. Luckily, many drivers were able to return to their trucks after fuel returned to an affordable state. However, many drivers lost everything because they were not prepared for such a vital resource to suddenly double in cost. It seems the government should prevent the price of fuel from skyrocketing. When the price of fuel rises so does the price of goods. When the prices of goods rise, we call it inflation. Too much inflation causes the economy to take a nose dive and that causes a chain reaction that spills out onto the housing industry, auto industry, job market, etc. It would be nice if we could rely on our government to do what is in the best interest of the American people, but where there is a dollar to be made there is a lie to be told.
